Introduction to C Language

Web Definition of C Language

C is a general-purpose, imperative computer programming language, supporting structured programming, lexical variable scope and recursion.while a static type system prevents many unintended operations.

C Keywords and Identifiers

Character set : Character set are the set of alphabets, letters and some special characters that are valid in C language.

Alphabets:

Uppercase: A,B,C ………………. X,Y,Z.

Lowercase: a,b,c ………………. x,y,z.

Digits: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

Special Characters in C language:

Here is following character that is used in C language.

( . < > , – $ : % [  ] & {  } *  / ^  | ” + ? ~ ! ; _ )

White space characters:-

new line, horizontal tab, carriage return, blank space and form feed.

Keywords:

Here, int is a keyword that indicates ‘amount’ is of type integer. As in Programming language all keywords must be

written in lowercase. Different keywords are use in C language that is predefined by ASCII C.

Keywords in C language:-

(Auto, double, int, long, character, struct , const, float, short, unsigned, volatile, sizeof, goto , default, do, if, static,

while, break, else, long, switch, case, enum, return, register, typedef, char, exter, union, continue, for, signed, void)

Additionally these keywords, there are some additional keywords supported by TURBO C.

(asm, far, interrupt, pascal, near, huge, cdecl )

All these keywords, their syntax and application will be discussed in their respective topics.

Identifiers

Identifiers are the name represent in C language , such as variables, functions, structure etc.

Rules for Identifier:-

1:- An identifier can composed letters of uppercase and lowercase and only underscore ‘_’.

2:- First letter of identifier name should be either than of underscore.

3:- There is no rule for the length of an identifier. However, the first 31 characters of an identifier are discriminated by the compiler.
